| چکیده | ||
| This research explores the function of modality in shaping narrative point of view (POV) within Anthony Doerr’s novel All the Light We Cannot See (2014), utilizing the stylistic framework proposed by Simpson (2004). Despite extensive linguistic research on modality, its systematic relationship with POV in modern literary fiction warrants further investigation. Adopting a corpus-assisted stylistic approach that integrates quantitative frequency data with qualitative textual interpretation, this study categorizes modal verbs into epistemic, deontic, boulomaic, and perception types, mapping them onto Reflector and Narrational modes. The quantitative analysis demonstrates a distinct categorical distribution: epistemic and boulomaic modals occur exclusively in Reflector passages, while deontic and perception modals are restricted to Narrational sections. A chi-square test verifies a statistically significant association between modality type and POV (χ²(3, N = 1,377) = 1377.00, p < .001). Qualitative examination reveals that epistemic and boulomaic forms encode subjectivity and aspiration, whereas deontic and perception forms convey obligation and external authority. These results broaden the application of Simpson’s model to twenty-first-century literature, illustrating that modality serves as both a stylistic indicator and a structural principle of narrative organization. The study offers implications for the fields of stylistics and narratology, alongside pedagogical suggestions for incorporating modality analysis into literary and language education. | ||
